Golfers frequently ask what launch angle they "should" have off the tee, expecting a single correct answer. In reality, optimal launch angle is entirely dependent on ball speed and spin rate — there is no fixed number that applies across every swing speed and delivery style.
Why Launch Angle Can't Be Optimized in Isolation
Higher ball speeds require lower launch angles and lower spin rates to maximize carry distance, while lower ball speeds generally need higher launch angles and slightly more spin to keep the ball airborne long enough to travel its potential distance. A launch angle that's ideal for a 170 mph ball speed would likely undershoot distance potential entirely at 135 mph, and vice versa.
This is why generic advice like "aim for a 12–15 degree launch angle" is only useful as a rough starting point — the actual optimal number shifts meaningfully based on your individual ball speed and spin characteristics.
How Attack Angle Changes the Equation
Attack angle — whether you're hitting up or down on the ball at impact — interacts directly with static loft to determine dynamic loft, which is the loft the club actually presents at the moment of contact. A golfer with a negative attack angle (hitting down) reduces effective loft at impact, generally requiring more static loft to reach an efficient launch angle. A golfer with a positive attack angle (hitting up) adds effective loft, often needing less static loft than expected.
Two golfers with identical swing speeds can need drivers three or four degrees apart in loft, purely because of differences in attack angle.
